What is an esport?

Esport (also sometimes written as ‘eSport’, ‘electronic sport’, ‘e-sports’) is an organised competition using computer games as the method for competing.

Esports can be likened to a traditional sport (such as football, tennis etc.) in terms of how competitions are structured. At the top end, there are professional teams competing for large prizes (sometimes VERY large prizes). At the grass-roots level, smaller competitions for amateurs are prevalent and that’s all backed up by a casual player scene where anyone can play.

There can also a blurry line between esports titles and entertainment. Some games have a massive online following because they are entertaining to watch and are great to form a community around (Among Us is a great recent example)… these games have a lot in common with esports titles (online streaming viewership, grassroots level players, entertainment), but lack the competitive tournament structure and generally aren’t added to the esport category.

Esport FAQ

How do esport teams make money

Successful esport teams have multiple streams for making money so as not to rely too heavily on any one source. Merchandise sales, Sponsorship, Streaming, Promotion and Tournament winnings are some of the main channels esport teams make money.

What is the biggest / most popular esport

The esport with the biggest overall current prize pool is Dota 2 with USD$34,330,000 in total prizemoney for the 2019 Dota 2 International (2020 postponed due to Covid-19, but the overall prizemoney pool is already slightly higher for the next event.

The most popular by viewership is League of Legends, with peak viewership of 3.9m watching the 2019 LoL world titles. League of Legends is also one of the most played games on PC with over 100m active players during 2020.

Which are the most successful esport fps games

Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) has led the way for esport First Person Shooter (FPS) games for a long time now, and as far as pure fps games go, it’s still the gold standard.

Fortnite, Overwatch, Rainbow 6 Seige, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds and Call of Duty are also popular and mix things up in the FPS genre to varying degrees. Apex Legends and Valorant are newer additions that are starting to get a little momentum behind them too.

How big is the esport industry

The esport industry is still going through a huge growth phase as it started picking up momentum from about 2012 onwards. At the end of 2019 the industry had a worldwide viewership of over 400m and total revenues of around $1b. There was over $170m in prizemoney handed out across all games and tournaments. Console or PC for competitive esports?

PC Gaming far and away is the leader when it comes to esports platforms, with the majority of the major titles running exclusively on PC due to either game selection (League of Legends is not currently available on any console for instance), game responsiveness (PC’s can be customised to far higher spec than current consoles) or tournament format (Arena based events predominately use PC’s for their gaming machines rather than consoles).

That doesn’t mean consoles are left out in the cold though, some games run tournaments exclusively on consoles (EA FIFA runs both Xbox and PlayStation versions of their tournaments) and others are starting to include cross-play where appropriate (e.g. Rocket League, Fortnite).

What does esport stand for?

Essentially, esport stands for electronic-sport… kind of like email is electronic-mail. In saying that, it’s not really important what the ‘e’ stands for, it’s really just organised gaming events.

How do I become an esports player?

That’s a massive question and there are so many pathways that might lead you to a professional esports team. If you’re school-aged, there are lots of high school and university esport competitions popping up everywhere – that’s a great place to start, join one of those teams or clubs if you can and immerse yourself in the esports landscape with your peers, build your skills and get a great insight into how the world of esports operates.

If you’re already right up there and competing at a high level at your chosen game – get your name out there. Play in as many tournaments as you can, join related online communities, stream or post clips of your games if you can and just make yourself known. If you’re good enough, start approaching teams, make sure they know who you are and be ready to learn – even if you think you know it all.
